In honor of Father's Day, I thought I would share some insight into men: Art makes them happy!

Norwegian Men are known for seeking happiness in life, they even build research teams tasked to discover how they can be more satisfied in life!

In a recent study conducted by these happiness seekers,  it was determined that men that enjoy cultural activities are better off in mind and body than their uncultured counterparts.  The study followed on over 50,000 men and women to tracked their personal satisfaction, perceived state of health, anxiety and depression. Overall, both men and women who participated in cultural activities—including enjoying fine artwork, had lower levels of anxiety and depression, reported more life satisfaction, and generally “felt better” than those not participating in cultural activities. But the biggest beneficiaries were men. And here’s the strange part: men more interested in watching and looking at fine art images— at home, in museums and art galleries – enjoyed the greatest benefits of all; even more than men actively participating in cultural and creative activities. Lucky for you guys, Gallery Direct has a lot of images hand selected just for the guys!   Here are our top "Guy Art" picks: [caption id="attachment_1410" align="alignleft" width="153"] The Gunfighter by Benjamin Arnot[/caption] This image, The Gunfighter, is a favorite among the guys in the Gallery Direct office. Printed on aluminum and framed it was recently featured in our Gallery right out, Joseph Garcia's office.  This is a creation by Benjamin Arnot, he combines his painting with digital imagery, adding in a geometrical element.  Very manly, yet tasteful! [caption id="attachment_1414" align="alignright" width="255"] Urban Radio II by Sara Abbott[/caption] Graffiti images are very trendy right now and are a top pick among our male customers. Sara Abbott has several graffiti images, including the image to the right. These images look great on any substrate, I think the bigger the graffiti image, the cooler the effect. These next images are sexy, yet sophisticated. Appreciating the female form in a tasteful way can liven up any room, giving it a sexy contemporary look. I hope y'all took advantage of our awesome sales to purchase a special print for your special mom for Mother's Day. Don't worry, if you didn't. You can redeem yourself...this Sunday when you gather together with family to celebrate the awesome mother you have, be sure to capture some "not your average family portraits". We all have those posed portraits, looking straight at the camera putting our best smile on our face...but I actually find portraits where the subjects aren't necessarily looking at the camera much more interesting. When you capture a "moment" you can truly capture the feeling of the moment. I'll show you what I mean... Aren't these awesome! They just exude so much joy, and as a mother myself I know any mother would love to have a picture like one of these to hang in her home. So get it done this Mother's Day. Capture that moment! And then once you do have it printed with us here at Gallery Direct. You'll be sure to WOW her.

I am very excited about introducing our next new artist, Wyn Bielaska. I have the same passion about architecture, art and graphic design that he does. Wyn is an architect that has worked on a wide range of projects in the United States, Canada, China, Europe, and the Middle East. He has also been teaching option studios in the Masters Program at the Faculty of Architecture (now called the Faculty of the Built Environment), University of Washington, since 2002. Being a former Architecture and Graphic Design major in college, I was so happy to see Wyn's art roll in to Gallery Direct. You can see his background in his art, it has an architectural flair & structure and it also has a graphic design edge to it. Last month we released his "Ship Hulls" series. Here are some of my favorites: 21 Again II Noguchi Lost

Are there any of you out there that love a good art theft movie like I do? I guess because of my background in art and my job, I always enjoy a great art theft movie like the Thomas Crown Affair... A wealthy, bored financier orchestrates an elaborate heist to steal a Monet painting valued at 100 million to cure his boredom. Incognito is another art theft movie... It's about a talented art forger who paints a fake Rembrandt that was lost supposedly off the coast of Spain over 350 years ago. Actually, art and cultural property crime is a looming criminal enterprise that has a 6 billion estimated losses annually. Our FBI actually has a special art crime team that's purpose is to recover these precious pieces. One of the top 10 art thefts on the FBI list was the Van Gogh Museum Robbery, a museum I visited in Amsterdam in 2000! I couldn't believe it! "In December 2002, two thieves used a ladder to climb to the roof and break in to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In just a few minutes the thieves stole two paintings: Van Gogh’s View of the Sea at Scheveningen and Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen, valued at $30 million. Dutch police convicted two men in December 2003, but did not recover the paintings." Stealing art is like stealing history. All these wealthy art owners own a piece of history, wouldn't we all love to. :) Well if you've browsed around Gallery Direct's Classic Art section you would find out that you could own a very affordable Giclée of a piece of history! So go ahead, stream a great art theft movie tonight and while you're watching that browse our art and order yourself a classic art piece!

Spring is my favorite time of year - for decorating my home and myself.  I view my artwork in my home like I view my choice of clothing -- they are both a reflection of who I am.  So being in style is important to me.  Spring usually brings out the boldest colors of the year, and 2012 has BRIGHT colors, and I absolutly love all of them. From neons to soft pastels this spring colors are HOT!

These ladies are sporting all the trends -- let's start from left to right.  As most of you know from Breanna's blog post, Tangerine is the IN color, so go ahead and get an entire outfit of Tangerine, look how fabulous this woman looks.

The next woman is sporting a shade of pantone color Cockatoo -- paired with Starfish accents giving her an airy yet elegent look.  These colors are sure to brighten any room making it feel more open and airy.  I just placed Beach Series III by Sara Abbott in my living room and I can almost feel the cool breeze sweeping through.

In the middle we have the bright yellow that has come full circle and returned to be one of the hottest colors again this spring.  Pair it with pantone Caberet (shoes) and you have a knock out look that is sure to turn every head.

This next outfit, really captures the essence of Spring 2012 with the mixture of Margarita Green and Sodalite Blue with the floral pattern.  If you are going to wear florals this spring, make sure they are bright and big, and the colors are in season and you could rock this look.

The last outfit is a nice sophisticated blend of the Cackatoo with a light shade of Tangerine - almost a coral color, which is definitely an in color.

Think BOLD, BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL!

PANTONE recently declared Tangerine Tango as the 2012 Color of the Year. If you don’t know what PANTONE is, that’s okay. Allow me to explain. PANTONE is a company best known for its matching system (PMS), which is a color-standardization guide primarily used in the printing industry. They provide PANTONE Guides that look a lot like the paint sample strips you get at a home improvement store, and it essentially works the same way. For example, if a company uses PANTONE 19-1664, or True Red, in its logo, they can rest assured that no matter how many different printers are used to print it, the red will stay true to its form. Make sense? Every year PANTONE chooses a color of the year. The color is based on trends seen in fashion and interior design, as well as the general spirit of the times. According to PANTONE, Tangerine Tango provides the “energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.” I know you’re wondering, “Why should I care?” Well, you should care because it means that Tangerine Tango is the new "it" color. It can be seen in the spring lines of many notable fashion designers including Tommy Hilfiger, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe by Shaun Kearney, Elie Tahari, and Adrienne Vittadini. And it’s popping up in accessories, pillows, and fabrics all over the place. Incorporating Tangerine Tango in the art you choose for your home is the easiest way to modernize and energize your space. I’ve even taken the liberty of compiling a few of my favorite paintings with this color: [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="237" caption="Divulge I by Sylvia Angeli"]Divulge I by Sylvia Angeli[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Wall Flower I by Sara Abbott"][/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="267" caption="Pyracantha by Stella Alesi"]Pyracantha by Stella Alesi[/caption] You can see all of our art with varying shades of orange by clicking here.
