Gallery Direct Artist, Justin Garcia, was voted the Editors Choice Best Artist of 2013 by the Houston Press. Painter Justin Garcia calls himself an abstract expressionist. It's a more accurate label than simple artist, he says. Garcia is currently enjoying success with both collectors and critics. In today's fickle art world, that's rare. Rarer still is Garcia's drive to blend his artistic endeavors with good business sense. Putting good work on the canvas isn't enough. His self-imposed job description includes getting those canvases in front of an appreciative - and buying - public. "I believe that Houston is a great city filled with great artists.  I'm grateful to the Houston Press for their recognition of my work and honored to have been chosen to be a part of their Silver Anniversary edition. Congratulations on 25 wonderful years and your many contributions to the City of Houston."

So, I'm a shopaholic. I have accepted this about myself (even if my husband has not). Turns out that it's not very healthy for my bank account for me to shop ALL THE TIME, so to keep my urges in check, I've started creating mood boards of dream rooms inspired by art. I've been in love with Caroline Ashton's Story series for a while now - check out Story I and Story II. I love the cool teal color palette, and undulating lines. My mood board, inspired by Story I, has a mix of clean, modern pieces with strong lines and more organic-feeling patterns and textures: "Story I" Mood Board Artwork centerpiece: 1. Meet Melinda of Look What Mom Found... And Dad Too one of our Gallery Direct Style Ambassadors. Together with her husband Robb she is raising 3 kids whom you can see in this gorgeous framed canvas that she created by uploading a photo.
Melinda really inspired me when she redid her family room with a series of prints by M. Drake. The way she filled the wall with various sizes of gallery wrapped canvas turned out just perfect. Melinda wanted a bigger impact than just one piece can make for her high ceiling room and I think she nailed it. The touch of whimsy makes it that much better. Be sure to check out all of Melinda's ideas for decorating with Gallery Direct art as well as all the other great information she shares on her blog.
Meet Gallery Direct Style Ambassador Felicia whom you can find blogging at Go Graham Go. As a mom to two busy little boys she still finds time to do some great decorating with her Gallery Direct art. Her picture of her favorite vacation spot on aluminum first sparked my love for this incredible media, the water seems to literally sparkle. The pictures do not do it justice!

I also love the creative way Felicia used vintage art for her little boys room. It looks perfect now and yet it will still look perfect when he is a teen. She chose a great framed canvas airplane and a fabulous vintage car on gallery wrapped canvas, they both turned out great. For more great decorating ideas as well as other great tips and information be sure to check out Felicia's blog Go Graham Go.

Does your house need some sprucing up? Are you lacking ideas in the home decor department? Here are some tips on how to decorate your home and make it really pop. Mix art with tabletop accessories: Hang your art about 8 to 12 inches above the table to form an connection between the wall items and tabletop decor. When choosing accessories for the tabletop make sure they are tall enough to overlap the artwork creating unity. Filling A Large Wall: When you have a large wall to fill there are several different ways you can decorate.
  • Try grouping in odd numbers, it creates more interest.
  • Decorate with a series, use multiples of the same print in varying colors.
  • Choose art in the same color scheme but vary the size and shape
Unique Accessories: Have a  unique accessory you want to accent? Use an over-sized piece of art as a backdrop you can set it on the floor or on a tabletop. Art doesn't always have to be hung. Add Some Color: Don't be afraid to add some bold color and try some new combinations.
  • Choose colors that are opposites on the color wheel like blue and orange and purple and yellow they will really pop against each other.
  • In a neutral room add interest with only one or two bold pops of color either in art or accessories.
  •  Use a white wall to really accent a colorful painting.

Join us in congratulating Gallery Direct's Artist Shirley Williams! Shirley has won the inaugural Elizabeth Havelock Grant from the Windsor Endowment for the Arts. The annual award is presented to one mid-career artist who’s made significant contributions to arts and culture in their community.  We could not be happier to have this award go to one of our own Gallery Direct Artists. Shirley accepted the award at a reception hosted last week. The image above shows Shirley (middle) being honored by Federal MP Brian Masse and Councillor Joanne Gignac. " We all enjoyed a lovely evening in an enchanting, recently revived, historical building. They served the most tasty and tempting appetizers. We were also treated to an exquisite piano recital of Chopin and Rachmaninoff," said Shirley Williams. Congrats Shirley!

The Extreme Makeover Home Edition Season 9 is in full swing and is already on it's 4th episode of the season (aired on 10.16.11).  I had the pleasure to watch the episode and tweet with fellow admirer's of what EMHE does for families in need. For this past Sundays episode I was able to join other EMHE viewers online while watching Season 9's 4th episode about the Korpai family.  In this episode Ty and the rest of the EMHE crew head to Crawford, NY to surprise a family that have been advocating for dwarfism since having their daughter, Hailey.  Hailey was born with dwarfism and as a Little Person she had challenges with her home.  Jimmy and Darlene (Hailey's parents) are the President and Vice President of the New York chapter of Little People of America.  Their home serves as the facility for their Little People of America chapter and they wanted to be able to appropriately accommodate Little People visitors and Hailey.  The Korpai's are such an inspiration and a deserving family to have the help of EMHE. MOVE THAT BUS!  The EMHE crew built an amazing home and a new Understanding Dwarfism Center where everything is at the perfect level.  A lot of thought and care goes into building these homes.  Of course I didn't make it through the entire episode without crying! Hailey was such a sweet little girl!  It touched my heart to see all of the people reaching out to support this family. Every inch is thoroughly thought out by the EMHE team, including the artwork!  At Gallery Direct we're proud to be able to donate artwork to each episode of EMHE.  The EMHE crew chooses the artwork specifically for each families new home from our collection. These are the Gallery Direct artwork pieces that were seen on this episode: [gallery columns="4" orderby="title"]
EMHE has moved to their show to Friday nights starting on Friday October 21st at 8/7c.  During the episodes we give out FREE artwork to a few lucky participants during the shows!  We'd love to hear about what you think of the artwork seen on the EHME episodes.  Comment here or join us on our facebook page. Tweet with us @GalleryDirect and use #EMHE to tweet during the show.
Enjoy! Brooke
Last month, the folks at “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” asked us to donate artwork to the MLB Fan Cave.  We really enjoy the relationship we have with “EM: HE” and their designers.  So when the design team, headed by Paul DiMeo, asked Gallery Direct to donate artwork to this first of its kind dream lair, where one lucky fan gets locked in a lush baseball fantasy world to watch every one of the 2430 Major League regular season games. We said, “YES!” Since “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is involved, you know the project can only be over-the-top because Everything “EMHE” does is over-the-top! The designers selected one giant mural for us to create and twenty-two other images. We’ve really enjoyed seeing the whole thing develop. You should take a look. We get asked a lot, “That partnership you have with ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ must really pay off?” We have to say, “That’s not why we did it. We love the show. We love the lives and communities the show assists. End of story.”  Of course, nobody’s buying it; they think it’s part of some corporate “cause marketing” campaign. Whatever!  “EM: HE” found us randomly, doing a search online. No PR firm was hired to make the alliance. But make no mistake, when we see our artwork hanging each week in the “walk-through,” it makes us feel pretty awesome. What goes around comes around. So, we were honored to be asked to beautify the walls of the MLB Fan Cave.  And if you’re asking, “Is it going to pay off?” We’ll reply, “Who cares? It’s just super cool!” [above: Paul DiMeo personally hanging new work by M. Drake: Frank Sees]
