Austin is renowned for its live music and awesome festivals. But when it comes to the art scene, Austin's East Side hipsters could give Brooklyn's hipsters a run for their Hush Puppies. In the heart of one of the largest conservative states is a liberal oasis where retro style meets contemporary sensibility. Whether a current resident or a visitor, there's plenty to explore. Austin has its selection of art museums, like Blanton Museum of Art. But it's Texas, rugged country. Get off the beaten path. Try the graffiti park at Castle Hill in Clarksville. With the ever-changing artwork, think of it as a free outdoor exhibit you can rediscover on a monthly basis. Looking for original art to buy from new artists? Head on over to Austin Art Garage. You might see some familiar work by Joel Ganucheau and Judy Paul, two of Gallery Direct's artists. For more of the visual feast Austin has to offer, check out our Pinterest board, "ATX Art Scene". On it, you'll find links to galleries and events and hidden gems around the city.

My most recent project with Gallery Direct was selecting art with a couple in Austin, Texas that just moved from the East Coast. Two very different personalities presented themselves, which is always a fun design challenge. Nicola, a fashionista who has an extreme passion for abstract art and design. Her husband Christian, has an intense passion for sailing, the ocean, and very traditional. Their common denominator was entertaining their friends at their known dinner parties. Their Austin home had one of the best modern dining room layouts, providing his and her walls to showcase their personalities in their favorite room. Like everyone, they had a budget so we started at Gallery Direct. Nicola was shocked at the options, but extremely puzzled how to make this important space both theirs. She wasn’t real thrilled to be searching for an abstract ship to compromise. It was important for her to have something colorful and abstract of her own. To ease the overwhelming search for her we took three easy steps to get started, here they are:
  1. Check out the Brand New First Additions
  2. Use the search engine with key words that express an emotion you might want to feel in that room.
  3. Gallery Direct has the best Subjects section online. That is where we found what we were looking for. (Abstract for Nicoloa and Coastal and Tropical for Christian)
We choose the Brisbane by Brett Pfister with an aluminum finish for Christians wall and a series of four abstract pieces by Jamie Packard on gallery wrapped canvas for Nicola. Two Quick Tips:
  1. To help finalize your decision for your art selection, choose three, print them at home or your office, tape them on the selected wall(s). Leave them up for at least a day. By the end of that day you will know which one you want.
  2. When deciding on a size, use blue tape to safely show you the impact of the size on your wall.  Don’t be shy to go big!
Nicola and Christian were extremely excited to have their guests over. They now have amazing conversation pieces with the balance of vibrant energy and the calming sea showcasing both personalities they desired. Until the next project… Give the gift of art to your temple. Make it the colorful palace you look forward to coming home to. Sarah

Austin is still recovering from Formula One and what a blast this city was during the Inaugural Circuit of Americas US Grand Prix on November 16 – 18.  The city of Austin estimated that the brand new race track drew in 300,000 fans, and boy was the city buzzing.  From the red carpets to the race track Gallery Direct created some really cool artwork for the events.  Check it out: These are 4 feet by 9 feet prints on canvas, that we custom made for the Circuit of The Americas Opening party at the Frank Erwin Center.  They asked us to put a spin on the tradition “Step and Repeat” for the red carpet and this is what we came up with. Pretty cool huh?  Aerosmith rocked the house while the VIP’s hung out in these luxury suites. The New Era Suite out at the race track looked fast and furious with this formula one car printed on aluminum, the view wasn’t bad either. Were you at formula?  Tell us about it!!

So you know I work for a cool art company in Austin TX – Right? One of the many perks is that I get to select the furnishings and decor for my office. We just did a major expansion and remodel, for which we ordered lots of new furniture (from Amanda Saylor – furnitureforbusiness.com – awesome designer and stellar company BTW) – so I already have a functional and attractive desk, credenza, and locker! It’s Miro by Watson Desking. I consider it Danish modern – which I don't always love – but works perfectly as minimalist office furniture. The task chair – Hon Nucleusis – is sooo comfy, and the leather guest chairs – Cyclus by Harter – are soft as butter (although someone has already gotten blue pen on one – Grrr!). I’ve also found a complementary console – BDI’s Cascadia – in white – from collectichome.com. And you know what? My work environment makes me happy – day after day. Incredible work environments are critical to employee satisfaction – which in turn promotes brand satisfaction. See my March 2012 blog on how Satisfied Employees Become Your Brand Champions. (http://bit.ly/Q6iblT). Brad Wells, Principal of Furniture for Business gets it. He told me that when you spend upwards of 8 to 12 hours a day in an office, you want it to be inspiring. "We help the customer create a culture that fosters growth, creativity and morale and even helps a company be more profitable when the employees love their workspace. It’s about attracting and retaining top talent in Austin!" Our CEO – Joe Garcia – totally gets it and is all about creating such an environment for his people. Recently, he took several of us over to the offices of All Web Leads, another cool Austin company. Designed by Gensler, they were amazing. My favorite part? Their kitchen featured two fully stocked beverage fridges! I love my office, but guess what I love the most? The art of course! What do you think of the little pug? Is he not so cute you could die!!! We're all fighting over him; perhaps we'll do some reprints! And I'm not done yet. I want to create a fabulous, feminine, lively space. I'm looking at Darvin Jones’ Love is Longing For I (bitly.com/RvxBNk). Is it not sweet, kitschy and joyful? Plus it makes me think of Bambi who I've always adored! And what about Grid Strategy I (bit.ly/TTVQDp) by Christine Wilkinson. I love the iridescence, which reminds me of my favorite OPI polish – Tutti Frutti! In fact, I'm going to rename it Tutti Frutti! I’m parked in a fabulous spot – with a wall of windows that provides northern exposure. Naturally I’m facing the door so I can greet my cheerful Customer Experience team – some of whom you might have already met – Amy, Sarah, Kim, Jen, Johana, Brooke, Rylee – It’s our mission to make our customers happy, and these wonderful young people know how to shine! Shine On Peeps!

We're always honored to have the opportunity to work with LifeWorks, an awe-inspiring organization that provides counseling, housing and support services to at-risk youth and families in the Austin area. Through the LifeWorks Supportive Housing program, former foster children, formerly homeless kids, and teen parents are provided with a safe place to live while they get back on their feet. Last week, more than 300 corporate and community volunteers came together to participate in LifeWorks' annual Home Improvement Challenge, and teams of volunteers worked with local designers to transform these living spaces into fully furnished and decorated homes—in a one-day race against the clock. We can't think of any group of people who deserve beautiful, inspiring spaces more than the kids and families LifeWorks supports. We were thrilled to play a role in this year's Home Improvement Challenge: our photographer, Candice, shot photos of each LifeWorks client family, and each of them received a surprise family portrait in their newly transformed apartment. On top of that, our amazing CEO, Joseph Garcia, and his wife spent the day working on an apartment makeover (Joseph is on the LifeWorks board).
