Have you ever wished that you could take beautiful pictures like the ones your favorite artist takes? Besides taking a course on photography there are a few easy things us amateurs can do to improve our picture taking skills and become overall better photographers!
  1. Natural Lighting: I know you hear it all the time but natural really is better so turn off that flash and find some great natural light then get snapping!
  2. Eliminate Clutter: It is easy to lose the focus of your picture when the background is too cluttered. Decide what you want your focus to be and try to remove the rest if possible.
  3. Find A New Angle: Try switching up your angle it can really add new interest to a photo. Get at eye level or take the photo from above or below, just experiment.
  4. Focus: Play around with the focus, get really close or far away, just do something different you may be surprised at how it turns out.
  5. Take Lots of Pictures: Finally just take a lot of pictures trying new things and you will improve just by experimenting and practicing.

Join us in welcoming our newest artist to the Galley Direct family, A. J. Andrews. Although A. J.'s parents were musicians, he ended up an artist & photographer because he has a good eye for composition, balance and color. From a young age A. J. enjoyed taking photos of interesting people, animals and landscapes. As the years passed his realistic photography went more abstract. A. J. feels he is always learning from his environment, life experiences, lucky mistakes and looking at the work of others for inspiration. Today A. J. lives with his wife in a small town in New Jersey. Here are some of my favorite images by him, and I love the explanations he gives for them. AJ102A Light Display on House in the Midwest "Sometimes people go overboard with decorative holiday lights on and around their homes. For me as a photographer, however, the more the merrier! Here was an opportunity where layers of lights were twinkling and flashing, while my camera was zigging and zagging, resulting in a couple of very engaging images." AJ106A Window at Barney's "People call Barney's in New York an emporium of style and fashion, and their recent Lady Gaga windows were a special visual treat. The calming colors of a “crystal cave” blended together to create this memorable ice image. Cool!" AJ112A Large Mineral on Display at AMNH "Rare iridescent fossil shells of disk-‐shaped ammonites can be found along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. One such beautiful gemstone specimen offered the colors and shapes that seems only nature and time can create." AJ115A Clivia Miniata in Bloom "During a recent visit to a nearby botanical garden, planters full of these colorful blossoms were just calling out for attention. They were not to be ignored – and my camera obliged." Be sure to check out the rest of A. J. Andrews work on Gallery Direct!

Are your kids going back to school soon? Mine start in 2 weeks, and I'm as anxious and excited as they are! Like me, I'm sure many of you like to take lots of photos on your kids first day. It's a great way to document the day, and the photos can also turn into memories you can hang on your walls! Besides the traditional portraits of my kids wearing their new school clothes and backpacks, I also like to take detailed photos like the ones above and below. Things like the number bus they rode, their clothes laid out that they will wear, the note I leave in their packed lunch. Well my friend posted an awesome idea several months ago that I thought I would share, and also to remind you what to do with all those art projects your kids bring home from school this year. She's my buddy from college and also received her Bachelor of Arts emphasizing in Graphic Design. I have mountains of my kids school work in binders, folders and bags. I feel like I would be a terrible mom to just toss it all, but what do you do with it? Well create a beautiful piece of art like my friend did! And then get it printed at Gallery Direct! This is such an awesome idea. I plan on doing it for my 2 kids this year. It would be great to hang in their rooms or in the hallway by their bedrooms. I'm inspired, hope you are too.

Can you think of a time when vintage art hasn't been trendy?  From the civil war images, to vintage alcohol advertisements, to printed cliche's, vintage is here to stay.  Our latest collection, Vintage Botanicals, was curated with your sophistacted vintage style in mind.

Images of florals and botanicals are always in season, no matter where you live on the globe, vintage botanicals are appropriate decor all year round.   If your taste is more of the contemporary modern kind, than try printing your favorite floral images on aluminum, as shown above. If you're more of a country cottage type, maybe print an image or two onto birchwood, giving your florals a nature look.  This a vintage botanical from Gallery Direct, that was featured on French County Cottage.  Blogger Courtney printed these vintage flowers on birchwood.  They look absolutely stunning resting on her fireplace! Canvas gallery wraps are perfect for the traditional look, try adding a frame if you'd like to dress the image up a bit.  The customization is endless with Gallery Direct. Do you have a Vintage Botanical image in your home?  Tell us about it!

From Wikipedia: Digital art is a general term for a range of artistic works and practices that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process. "A common misconception is that if you are using a computer to create art, that all you're doing is pressing a few buttons and the computer is doing all the work. Generally that poor assumption is born out of misunderstanding. Whether you are using a pencil and paper or a computer and tablet, drawing is drawing. The devices themselves are tools, means to an end to bring visual ideas out of your imagination and into the real world." Quote from artist Patrick LaMontagne's video posted below. We have several artists whose work fits the category of digital art. Instead of sending us their art on canvas to scan, they just send us their digital files of artwork. Some of them integrating their drawings or photography and then using their computers to turn it into art! It's really amazing, and their work is really beautiful. Here are samples of their art: Be sure to check out more of their work on Gallery Direct! Also please listen and watch the video below. I believe this artist explains digital art really well and he sure does an awesome job at drawing a cartoon bear! http://youtu.be/pjaIyQXv0M8
