About Joie Tamkin

Joie Tamkin is the Director of Marketing and Communications at Gallery Direct. She grew up in San Diego and loves living in Austin, Texas. She enjoys running the trails of Austin, home decorating and has an obsession with all things digital, especially social media.
When you're invited to an art exhibit or gallery, do you hesitate to go in fear of feeling stupid if you don't understand the artwork?  I think we've all been there.  Most people are intimidated by art, and I used to be that way as well, even though I work at Gallery Direct.  I remember going on a date in New York City to the Museum of Modern Art and as my date stared at a brown sculpture I was looking around wondering why he and everyone else was admiring a sculpture that looked like my dog's food.  Most people, like I did, assume they must understand the art intellectually before they can enjoy it. The man in this picture could be thinking about his favorite soup that his wife cooks or where his parents used to grocery shop when he was little.  Whatever is going through his mind, he is certainly enjoying his experience. That is what art is all about! It's about the experience that it brings to your life. Art is created for you to enjoy, however you want to enjoy it.  You do not need to take an art appreciation class before picking out art that you like.  Just look at the images and let the artwork do the work for you.  The image could bring back an old memory and spark an emotional feeling.  You might be inspired by the painting to start something new, or reminded of something you used to love to do. You could find a shape or color in the image that draws you in. A song, or scenario might start forming in your mind and you start to day dream. Often, the less you know about art, the more free your mind is to get lost in the brush strokes.  Art is a lot like wine, it's not the cost or the color that necessarily matters, it's all about what tastes good to you. How have you learned to enjoy artwork?

Are your kids going back to school soon? Mine start in 2 weeks, and I'm as anxious and excited as they are! Like me, I'm sure many of you like to take lots of photos on your kids first day. It's a great way to document the day, and the photos can also turn into memories you can hang on your walls! Besides the traditional portraits of my kids wearing their new school clothes and backpacks, I also like to take detailed photos like the ones above and below. Things like the number bus they rode, their clothes laid out that they will wear, the note I leave in their packed lunch. Well my friend posted an awesome idea several months ago that I thought I would share, and also to remind you what to do with all those art projects your kids bring home from school this year. She's my buddy from college and also received her Bachelor of Arts emphasizing in Graphic Design. I have mountains of my kids school work in binders, folders and bags. I feel like I would be a terrible mom to just toss it all, but what do you do with it? Well create a beautiful piece of art like my friend did! And then get it printed at Gallery Direct! This is such an awesome idea. I plan on doing it for my 2 kids this year. It would be great to hang in their rooms or in the hallway by their bedrooms. I'm inspired, hope you are too.

Can you think of a time when vintage art hasn't been trendy?  From the civil war images, to vintage alcohol advertisements, to printed cliche's, vintage is here to stay.  Our latest collection, Vintage Botanicals, was curated with your sophistacted vintage style in mind.

Images of florals and botanicals are always in season, no matter where you live on the globe, vintage botanicals are appropriate decor all year round.   If your taste is more of the contemporary modern kind, than try printing your favorite floral images on aluminum, as shown above. If you're more of a country cottage type, maybe print an image or two onto birchwood, giving your florals a nature look.  This a vintage botanical from Gallery Direct, that was featured on French County Cottage.  Blogger Courtney printed these vintage flowers on birchwood.  They look absolutely stunning resting on her fireplace! Canvas gallery wraps are perfect for the traditional look, try adding a frame if you'd like to dress the image up a bit.  The customization is endless with Gallery Direct. Do you have a Vintage Botanical image in your home?  Tell us about it!

From Wikipedia: Digital art is a general term for a range of artistic works and practices that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process. "A common misconception is that if you are using a computer to create art, that all you're doing is pressing a few buttons and the computer is doing all the work. Generally that poor assumption is born out of misunderstanding. Whether you are using a pencil and paper or a computer and tablet, drawing is drawing. The devices themselves are tools, means to an end to bring visual ideas out of your imagination and into the real world." Quote from artist Patrick LaMontagne's video posted below. We have several artists whose work fits the category of digital art. Instead of sending us their art on canvas to scan, they just send us their digital files of artwork. Some of them integrating their drawings or photography and then using their computers to turn it into art! It's really amazing, and their work is really beautiful. Here are samples of their art: Be sure to check out more of their work on Gallery Direct! Also please listen and watch the video below. I believe this artist explains digital art really well and he sure does an awesome job at drawing a cartoon bear! http://youtu.be/pjaIyQXv0M8
